Article – Nature – Alcoholism and Alcohol Liver Disease Have a Surprising Relationship with Sugar

A new paper from our group, published today in Nature Metabolism, shows that the preference for alcohol intake is due to the generation of fructose in the body that occurs after drinking. Furthermore, alcohol induced liver disease (such as fatty liver and cirrhosis) are also driven by the production of fructose. This study emphasizes the strong link between sugar and alcohol, and open the possibility that blocking fructose metabolism may be a new way to prevent alcoholism and alcohol-induced liver disease.
